Pommegranate
1994

Time is never linear, especially when painting the interior experience, memory moves about, pushing different things forward at different times and in different ways. I painted this piece in '94, but I read it as a natural extension of Girlhood With Snake painted in '99.
This is a piece about sexuality and the power of life.
This woman is fearless. She has faced death, either real or imagined and has it by the throat. Death is giant here, but has no power whatsoever.
She has chosen life, the pommegranate. A fruit difficult to eat, intricate and tedious, but worth every drop. She is also showing the viewer what lies beneath her everyday clothes.
This pose haunted me, haunts me still.
